With just a little practice using bait caster is easy.
1. The first thing you do is adjust the reel for the lure you plan on using. You do that by attaching your lure and testing the brake. You want the lure to slowly drop down when pressing the button in this position. You adjust the brake with this dial. When we first started I adjusted it pretty tight so that I wouldn’t get bird’s nests as easy. As we got more experienced we loosened it up.
2. Once the brake is properly set you press the button and take the reel back over your shoulder. Be sure to always check behind you before taking the reel back. Always safety first!
3. Bring the rod forward quickly when the rod is moving forward release your thumb from the spool. Always keep light pressure on the spool with your thumb until the lure hits the water.
4. As soon as the lure hits the water be sure to stop the spool with your thumb. Stopping the spool should keep you from getting a bird’s nest. But don’t worry if you do get a bird’s nest they are easy to get out but that’s a different clinic!
I definitely recommend that you practice in your backyard with an old lure that has no hooks on it. The more you practice the better you will get. One thing you can do to make practice fun is to put targets in the backyard and make a contest out of it. It is worth putting in the practice you will have more fun and a safer time on the water.
